Which hip implants have been recalled?

Many different types of hip implants have been voluntarily recalled by the company or recalled by the federal government for safety reasons. Some of the most common hip replacement products recalled for safety reasons include:

DePuy Hip Implant Recall

DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. (a division of Johnson & Johnson) announced a recall of its hip implant devices in August 2010. The recall came after a high number of people using the product needed a second surgery, or revision surgery, due to product failure.

The following are the two DePuy hip implant products subject to recall:

  • DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which was introduced in 2003
  • DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System, which was introduced in 2004

Some patients who underwent hip implant surgery later experienced loosening of the implant, bone fractures around the device or dislocation of the implant's ball and socket. Hip implant patients are urged to visit their surgeons for an evaluation. You may need a scan or an X-ray of your hip. If a serious problem is detected, a second surgery may be required.

In some cases, metal shavings produced by the defective hip implant device have gotten into a patient's blood stream. This may lead to heart failure or dementia.

If you experienced any problems involving a defective DePuy hip implant, it's also important to contact an experienced attorney at Smith & Hassler right away. We are ready to listen to your concerns and discuss your legal options. A delay may affect your rights to compensation.

DePuy Hip Implant Facts

Some hip implant patients who received the ASR Hip Resurfacing System or the ASR XL Acetabular System needed corrective surgery, according to DePuy Orthopaedics.

While DePuy has announced the company is willing to cover some of your hip replacement defect costs, it's very important that you discuss your situation with an attorney before accepting any compensation. You may be entitled to additional compensation for your losses.

Zimmer Durom Cup Recall

Another defective hip replacement device is the Zimmer Durom Cup, a hip component that is inserted into people undergoing total hip replacement surgery. The Zimmer Cup (technically the Zimmer Durom Acetabular Component) was withdrawn from the market in 2008 because some patients required additional surgery after the unit failed to properly bond.

Strkyer Hip Implant Recall

Stryker Orthopaedics recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems in 2012. The company recalled its hip implants due to a mechanical problem that caused corrosion and released chromium, cobalt and other metals into the bone and surrounding tissue.

Other Hip Implant Recalls

Along with the other hip implant recalls listed above, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also recalled hip implants for safety reasons manufactured by the following companies:

  • Biomet
  • Centerpulse
  • Encore Orthopedics
  • Exactech
  • Smith & Nephew
  • Wright Medical Technology

What makes hip implant defect cases so complicated?

You might think your hip implant defect case would be straightforward, especially if you sustained a serious injury due to your defective hip implant. The reality is many hip implant cases turn out to be very complex cases. Some of the reasons why include:

  • Company that made your defective hip denies doing anything wrong
  • Company that made your defective hip refuses to provide information about its mistake
  • Company that made your defective hip claims you caused your injury or illness
  • Insurance company that represents the company that made your hip denies your claim

Why would a company be so difficult to deal with after they made a defective hip implant? Because there’s often a lot of money at stake when it comes to defective hip implant cases – from a few thousands to perhaps millions of dollars. Those figures could climb even higher if many other people sustained similar injuries due to their design or manufacturing mistakes.

So, instead of cooperating with you, many of these companies take an aggressive legal stance and do everything they can to deny wrongdoing – and deny your claim.
